Just a Few Ingredients
The full ingredient list is in the recipe card at the bottom of the post, but here are some highlights.
- Salted butter – I like to use salted butter because Rice Krispie treats are very sweet. Salted butter adds some balance.
- Mini marshmallows – My secret is to melt some into the binding mixture and fold some whole marshmallows in with the cereal so you get some bigger gooey chunks.
- Vanilla extract – Marshmallows already have vanilla flavor, but adding more really amps it up. Use my homemade vanilla extract for great flavor.
- Rice Krispies cereal – Use the real deal! Surprisingly, some generic and store-brands don’t have the same texture.
- Holiday M&M’s – Usually in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day, you can find bags with red, pink, and white M&Ms at most grocery and big box stores.
- Holiday sprinkles – Jimmies are my favorite, but quins (flat sprinkles in circles and other shapes) will also work.
- Ghirardelli white chocolate melting wafers – Some white chocolates have an off flavor or mouthfeel, but Ghirardelli never lets me down.
Tips and Tricks
- It’s important to use fresh marshmallows and cereal. Stale marshmallows won’t melt well and stale cereal is chewy, not crispy.
- No cookie cutter? You can buy this heart one on Amazon. Or just cut your bars into squares with a sharp knife.
- If you don’t want to snack on the scraps, you can crumble them up a bit and use them as an ice cream topping!
- Store these Valentine’s Rice Krispie treats in an airtight container for up to 7 days or freeze them in airtight freezer safe container for up to 30 days.

Ingredients
- 6 Tablespoons salted butter
- 16 ounces mini marshmallows, divided
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 6 cups rice krispies cereal
- 1 ¼ cup holiday M&M's
- ¼ cup holiday sprinkles
- 5 ounces Ghirardelli white chocolate melting wafers, melted
Instructions
- Line a 13×9-inch baking dish with parchment paper. Set it aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Once melted, add in all but 1 cup of the marshmallows. Reduce heat to low and continue stirring until completely melted.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Add the cereal and the remaining 1 cup of marshmallows and gently stir until combined. Fold in 1 cup of the M&M’s and all the sprinkles.
- Pour into the prepared baking dish. Press GENTLY with your fingertips just until completely spread out. Allow to set one hour.
- When treats are set, lift parchment paper out of the pan and place on a cutting board. Using a 3-inch heart shaped cookie cutter, press down firmly to cut shapes. Save the discarded rice krispie treats to snack on!
- Drizzle the top of each heart with melted white chocolate and add the remaining 1/4 cup of holiday M&M's (you can even add a pinch of extra sprinkles too). Allow to set about 15 minutes.
Notes
- Be sure to use fresh marshmallows and cereal. Stale ingredients results in stale treats.
- I prefer using jimmies (the little log shaped sprinkles). They are soft and look great in these treats. Quins can also be used (these are the flat circles or shaped sprinkles). I would avoid non pareils for this recipe.
- No cookie cutter? You can buy this heart one on Amazon. Or just cut your bars into squares, that works too!
- Swap out the holiday candy and sprinkles and cookie cutter shape for any holiday you wish!
- Store treats in airtight container for up to 7 days.
- Freeze treats in airtight freezer safe container for up to 30 days.
