The Best Waffle Mix Recipe

Waffles are the superheroes of weekend breakfast! Sleeping in on a Saturday and having fresh waffles with maple syrup is the best.

While sometimes I might crave french toast or pumpkin scones, it’s waffles that make everyone happy!

Never made homemade waffles before? I’m here to assist you!

  • This recipe creates perfect waffles with buttery crisp edges that yield to a light and fluffy interior.
  • Homemade Waffles sweep the floor with the frozen toaster waffles—and you can even freeze leftovers!
  • Making waffles from scratch is hardly any more difficult than using a waffle mix. Boxed waffle mix can definitely be convenient but really just saves you the step of mixing the dry ingredients together. You can combine our dry ingredients together ahead of time too.

Be sure to try our chocolate chip waffles next! They’re homemade and delicious!

Ingredients for Waffle Mix

Here’s what you need to make this easy waffle recipe.

PRO TIP: Store dry ingredients in a sealed container for easy access when making waffles.

For the dry waffle mix:

Combine these ingredients in a bowl, then proceed with the recipe.

If you like, you can make this in advance to store. Then the next time you want waffles, pull out the dry ingredients and use like you would use a storebought waffle mix!

Wet ingredients to make the waffle batter recipe:

Metal scoop pouring batter onto a waffle iron.

How to Make Waffle Batter

Easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Make the batter. Mix the wet ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Pour it into the dry mix and whisk to combine. Let sit for a few minutes while you preheat your waffle iron.
  2. Prepare your waffle iron. Preheat your waffle iron. Spray waffle iron with baking spray before the FIRST batch only.
  3. Cook! Ladle batter into preheated waffle iron and cook until golden brown. Carefully remove the waffle and repeat with remaining batter. Keep waffles warm until ready to serve!

You can also use a belgian waffle maker to make my classic waffle recipe.

Aimee’s best tip

Make sure your waffle iron is hot enough before adding the batter. If the iron is not hot enough, the waffle may not cook evenly inside. It could end up sticking to the pan.

Waffle Toppings

They built waffle squares to catch pools of maple syrup and butter.

  • Fresh fruit and whipped cream are also heavenly on these waffles!
  • If you haven’t tried my homemade buttermilk syrup yet, DO IT. Only 5 ingredients and 5 minutes, you’ll love the rich flavor!
  • Don’t forget about the dessert waffles. A scoop of cold vanilla ice cream on top of a warm waffle just about makes me weak in the knees. (My kids have no complaints about them, either.) Add a drizzle of our homemade chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup to complete the treat.

Storage Tips

Make a large quantity of homemade waffles on the weekend and store any extras in the freezer. Then you’ll have convenient toaster waffles for weekday breakfasts, but with all the good taste of homemade!

To freeze waffles.

  1. Let all the waffles cool completely.
  2. Transfer to freezer bags with a sheet of wax paper between layers of waffle to prevent sticking. Store in the freezer until ready to use.

To reheat frozen waffles:

  • Place individual waffle in a toaster or toaster oven and heat until cooked through.
  • To reheat frozen waffles, bake them in the oven at 350 F. Cover with foil to prevent drying out while heating.

  • Along with a good waffle recipe, you need a good waffle iron! I love my Dash Waffle Iron. It’s inexpensive, easy to use and clean and always makes golden brown waffles.
  • In my Dash waffle iron, the waffles take about 3 minutes to cookthrough. Yours might take a bit less time or a bit more. If you’re new to waffle making, this make take some trial and error until you really get to know your waffle iron!
  • Keep waffles warm until ready to serve by setting them on a baking pan in the oven on the “warm” setting.
  • Looking for low carb or gluten free? Use the Dash waffle maker to make Chaffles. Cheesy buns with no carbs!

I’ve been searching for a go-to waffle recipe for years when I gave this one a try and it is a WINNER. I’ve made it a few times and they are always perfectly crispy yet soft on the inside and great flavor. Best of all they are super easy!! I came to make them yet again today and noticed the amount of baking soda is reduced, previously I had been using 1T. Was this changed for a reason? Just curious!

  2. I am pretty sure your baking powder was a mistype… as they tasted horrid and baking soda when added made them nice and fluffy but the taste was already ruined.

    1. It might be the brand of baking powder you are using. Gabber girl has sodium “aluminum” sulfate. That tends to add a metallic flavor. I switched to Argo brand. It doesn’t have it. My peanut butter cookies are to die for now. Big difference.

  3. So delicious!! We found your recipe this morning and my granddaughters (9 and 5 yrs old) made them with my supervision. Fluffy inside, nice light crisp on the outside. Thank you for sharing this recipe! We’ll be back for more 😎

I’ve never left a review before but after reading the others I felt I needed to say something. This recipe is delicious. Yes the batter is thick but if you are a little patient and spread it on the waffle iron it will give you a beautiful, thick waffle that tastes really good.

    Thank you!

These are my go to. I never worry about salted or unsalted. I just use salted butter and don’t bother adjusting the salt in the recipe. I have NEVER had a complaint about something being too salt even from people who turn up their nose at the salt shaker. I usually make extras and freeze them so when the grandkids come over, I can just pop them in the toaster.

Great recipe, thanks you! I used gluten free flour and added cinnamon and vanilla protein powder, mixed everythingin the blender so clean up was a breeze. At first I was afraid they were too thick, but they were amazing, airy, and fluffy….total hit!

  7. Whenever your baking. If recipe calls for unsalted butter and a pinch of salt. USUALLY it will work out just fine to omitt the extra salt and just use salted butter.

  8. Used salted butter and boy were these salty!! If you use salted butter, make sure to cut the salt in half. Otherwise great recipe!

    1. These waffles are perfect. I followed the recipe exactly and they came out so good. The batter is a little thick but I wouldn’t recommend adding any liquid to it. Just be patient and spread the batter on the iron. Absolutely delicious!!

  9. About to try my first ever homemade waffles. Wish me luck. I have been craving waffles for weeks. Finally gave in and these sound delicious.

  10. Wow they tasted very eggy. I thought the recipe would have been nice. Maybe I did a wrong ingredient measurement or something.

So quick, thank you. Decided to quickly do some waffles for my family this morning and it’s always hit and miss if it’ll work. Sometimes my waffles stick to the waffle maker or stay flat but this JUST WORKS! Thank you so much I’m saving this recipe

  12. Waffles were great. Would have been nice to have the recipe on top of the page but I’m sure you’re aware no one wants to read the rest or you would have done just that

  13. This batter needs to sit at least 20 min. Very little rise on the waffles if you cook them right away. My last one came out perfect. I should have followed my instincts!

Used “flax egg” and soy milk, plus Miyoko creamery vegan butter (melted), and it totally worked!! Great recipe
