Why this Recipe is Best

As a good loyal football fan (haha) I enjoy making football treats. Remember these Pumpkin Football Blondies and these Peppermint Patty Footballs? Or how about these Cocoa Krispies Treats?

Don’t even get me started on all the snacks and dips for this time of year!

It’s no secret I love making cheese balls. Savory? Sure. But it’s the sweet cheese ball that has my heart.

Wondering why this is the best cheese ball for your party?

  • Only 5 minutes prep
  • Packed with Oreos
  • Chills for an hour, OR can be eaten immediately
  • Shaped like a football (but can also be served in a bowl for any time of year)
  • Loved by kids and adults

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for cookies and cream cheese ball recipe.

You’ll only need SIX ingredients for today’s football dessert.

  • Butter- room temperature for easy blending. Use UNSALTED too.
  • Cream Cheese- it’s what gives this dip it’s name “cheese ball”
  • Oreos- smash them in a ziploc bag, keeping some chunks, you don’t want them to be fine crumbs. No need to scrape out the filling, use the whole Oreo.
  • Chocolate Syrup- adds to the chocolate flavor, and helps bind it all together. Use our homemade chocolate syrup for the best flavor!
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Chocolate Chips- I use mini semi-sweet for this dip, but milk chocolate works great too!

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Make the filling. Cream the butter, cream cheese and sugar together. Remove a spoonful for the “laces.” Put it aside in a ziploc bag.
  2. Add the Chocolate. Add the crushed oreos and chocolate syrup! Shape into a football. Refrigerate or if serving immediately, keep going!
  3. Shape. Using your hands, press the chocolate chips into the cheese ball.
  4. Laces. Using the ziploc bag, snip off the corner and pipe the white filling onto the cheese ball to resemble laces.

You could also add some ritz crackers, for a sweet and salty twist!

Some apple slices and strawberries are also delicious with today’s cheeseball recipe.

Want to change up the flavor a little?

  • Swap the Oreos for Nutter Butters and use peanut butter morsels as a topping (you could shape like a basketball for March Madness)!
  • Add golden Oreos to the filling with toffee bits.
  • Crush Chips Ahoy cookies for a chocolate chip cookie cheeseball!

Recipe FAQs

Can Oreo Cheese Ball be made in advance?

This sweet Oreo Cheese Ball can be made 24 hours in advance!

Do I need to use cream cheese in cookies and cream cheeseball?

The cream cheese in a cheeseball adds lots of flavor and tang. You could use all butter instead, or swap out the cream cheese for mascarpone cheese. Just be sure to adjust the sugar for proper consistency.

Can you freeze cheeseballs?

I don’t recommend freezing this cheeseball.

Comments & Reviews

  1. Super Bowl…that’s the one where they ride horses and hit things with sticks, right? LOL! Just kidding 🙂 I do know what sport it is (football) even if I don’t watch the game. I’m too busy scoping out the food table and shoving it all in my mouth. This is the coolest dessert! My girlie would be in 7th heaven if I made it for her…guess I know what dessert we will be having then, huh?

  2. Haha I totally feel the same way about football. I may have googled to see who was playing in the Super Bowl for a post! I’m all about the snack table during the Super Bowl and this treat would be a perfect addition!

  3. Ohh yum! I’m such a sucker for anything cookies and cream flavored. This could be dangerous if left alone with me…

  4. Cookies and cream anything is like my favorite combo ever! I’d be all over this cheeseball, protecting it and guarding it and making sure it was all mine. 😉 Just kidding. I’d totally share!

My boyfriend is a huge Bears fan, so naturally, I root for them, too. However, I think I only saw maybe one game this year. I very rarely ever watch an entire game, let alone any part of a game!

  5. I have a cheese ball post on Monday…but savory and no where near as ‘festive’ as this! Quite the masterpiece you created here!!

  6. I’ve never heard of a cheeseball before, but sweet has my heart over savoury any day. Great decision on adding the crushed Oreos in and not coating (although I’m sure that would be delicious too), the mini chocolate chips are perfect with the laces.

  7. Oh man! what a blast from the past! I grew up in Chicagoland. Every Sunday during football season was Church followed my pizza form he pizza set ups my mom would buy from the grocery store owned by a friend of my Dad’s. Then we would devour the pizza and watch my Mom watch the Bears and yell at coach Ditka. LOL

The first super bowl party my husband and I ever hosted was for the Bears VS New England. We’d been married just over a year, and werel iving in military housing (Very nice housing by the way) and there was one love New England fan in the crowd.

    I miss those Bears.

    The cheese ball looks yummy.

    1. Pizza and Bears….doesn’t get much better!! I love how food can ignite memories 🙂 Thanks for sharing Pam!!

  8. The Superbowl shuffle….hilarious! My husband was a cameraman on that video (his flock of seagulls hair and all). Good times!! Thanks for sharing the recipe looks yummy…sweet cheese is awesome! Okay, any cheese is awesome!! thanks again!!

  9. I love that you still know the words to the superbowl shuffle, almost as much as I love t his cheeseball

  10. I love how easy this is! My belief is that anything inspired by a bag of Oreos has to be amazing! 🙂

  11. Football is all about the food for me. I think this is one of the cutest ideas – so perfect for a superbowl party!

  12. What a great football treat. 🙂 With all the talk of deflated footballs, love that this one is filled with cheese!

  13. I’m no much into football or any sport for that matter. But the food, I’m all about. I can totally sit by the game day spread and snack away while everyone is focused in on the action. I’m not so sure there would be much of this cheese ball left though. I’m certain I would devour the majority of it. 🙂

  14. I love that you shaped this into a football! We’re huge college basketball fans so I’m sure I could adapt this by using butterscotch chips and turning it into a basketball shape. 🙂

    1. Oh for sure! Add some melted chocolate piping for basketball…hmmm, I think I’m gonna do it too 🙂

  15. Such a gorgeous dish! I would be a hero at my house. I love having football on, keeping tabs on what’s happening and socializing…but, I can’t remember the last time I sat down and watched an entire game. 🙂

  16. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m a Packer fan, but my dad is and every single one of my brothers are too, so I’m pretty sure I would be disowned if I didn’t at least try to enjoy their games. LOL. That being said, their last game was pretty dang painful. Ugh.
BUT at least there’s still football food, which you and I know are the most important part of the whole game. 😉 This cheeseball is screaming my name!

  17. “We are the Bears, shuffulin’ crew. Shufflin on down, doin’ it for you” Oh boy did you bring up some great memories Aimee!! I was in 8th grade that year and of course, had every word of that song memorized!! -still do!! I also loved that “punky Q-B!! Too bad our Bears just don’t have the same flare anymore. I love this cheese ball and would probably inhale it. It would definitely have my attention more than any football game would! 🙂

    1. Oh great, now I have the song stuck in my head again today! Did you watch the youtube video link I included? Oh man are we old….and that video was CHEESEY, LOL
