Why this Recipe Works

When Chick-fil-a discontinued their coleslaw, they did an amazing next step. They shared the recipe!

So I made it, and loved it, and it tastes just like the original (well, I guess it IS the original). And thought I would share it with you in case you love coleslaw as much as I do!

  • Fresh ingredients!
  • Tangy and flavorful.
  • One bowl.

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for chick-fil-a coleslaw recipe.
  • Cabbage- for an easy shortcut, I buy the already shredded cabbage mix for coleslaw. If you’re making your own, you can use green cabbage or a combination of red and green cabbage.
  • Mayonnaise- this is what gives this coleslaw it’s creaminess.
  • Vinegar- Chick-fil-a uses white vinegar, but you could also swap it out for apple cider vinegar. The vinegar adds the zesty tangy flavor to the dressing.
  • Sugar- just a touch of sweetness for the best coleslaw recipe!
  • Dry Mustard- adds a little flavor and spice to the recipe.

How to Make Coleslaw

Dressing for coleslaw in a clear glass bowl with a whisk.

Making coleslaw is so easy.

Step 1: Whisk together the mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt in a mixing bowl until smooth and creamy!

Step 2: Add in shredded coleslaw mix and fold over until completely coated.

PRO TIP: The Chick fil A coleslaw recipe calls for two bags of shredded cabbage and 1/4 cup shredded carrots. I bought shredded coleslaw mix instead! Huge time saver.

Step 3: Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight. Serve and enjoy!

The flavor of this coleslaw is perfect. Not too sweet, not too vinegary…it’s JUST RIGHT. Try it. You’ll see.

Serving Suggestions

Creamy coleslaw is perfect on a pulled pork sandwich! It’s also a great side dish for Instant Pot Hamburgers, Baked pork chops, and bbq chicken.

Swap out the lettuce on your sandwiches for a spoonful of homemade coleslaw. It’s a delicious addition, and a classic side.

Add some mix-ins. Sliced almonds, cranberries, and poppyseeds are great additions to coleslaw to give it a unique flavor!

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the mayo, vinegar, sugar, dry mustard, and salt until smooth.
  • Add in shredded cole slaw mix and fold over with spatula until completely coated. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours, or overnight.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Make in advance. If you're shredding your own cabbage and carrots, you can do this a day in advance. You can make the dressing several days in advance and store it in the refrigerator separately from the cabbage.
  • Refrigerate Coleslaw before serving. By combining the slaw with the dressing for two hours in the refrigerator, it allows the cabbage to soften slightly to make it the perfect texture!
  • Hawaiian Slaw. Try our delicious Kalua pork with homemade hawaiian slaw. SO GOOD.
  • To make coleslaw healthier, swap out the half mayonnaise for plain Greek yogurt.
  • Chop it small. Love the small pieces of cabbage in your slaw? Make it your own by chopping all the cabbage and carrots into small pieces. This will make it more similar to KFC Coleslaw.See blog post for more recipe tips and tricks.

Comments & Reviews

  1. My mom makes the best Cole slaw. My friends begged for it. I will have to look deep to find the recipe since my mom is gone and when I find it I will post it

  2. What are the ingredients in the “Cole slaw mix”? I can see cabbage and carrots, maybe some leeks… Any apple? I want to try this because I love coleslaw, but I have never seen any cole slaw mix here in Norway.

  3. This recipe is great. I did not use is powdered mustard I use ground mustard from my refrigerator. I also added cranberries, it was delicious. With cranberries, I loved it.

  4. This Cole Slaw was AWESOME!!! I love chick-fil-a’s coleslaw, and was so sad to see them discontinue it. I made this for a gathering and was very pleased with how it came out. It tasted wonderful!!

  5. Sounds like my mom’s coleslaw except she added onions to hers but everything else is the same. So isn’t original with Chic Fil A. The onions make it awesome.

  6. Chick-Fil-A is the nicest restaurant!  Service is excellent and the staff is always so friendly and willing to accommodate, so I’m not surprised they gave out this recipe.  Food is good, too!  They’ve added a kale salad, so maybe that’s why they’ve taken away cole slaw.  I’m not a kale lover, though.  Thanks for this recipe.  It’s a keeper.

  7. THANK YOU!!  I drive to Chick-Fil-A to buy coleslaw for BBQ’s — it’s that good (and never gets watery)!  I’m so happy to have this recipe!!  I think I’m a pretty good cook, but their cole slaw beats mine every time. 😉

  8. I didn’t know they were getting rid of the cole slaw…how sad!  But nice that they share the recipe.  I make mine that way too, but minus the dry mustard.  That must be the secret ingredient. And yes, those pre-shredded bags are the way to go!

    1. They better replace it with something out of this world amazing, or it will be very sad indeed, haha!

  9. I can’t believe they handed over their recipe! I wish someone like Cinnabon would do that so we would all just finally know 🙂 This cole slaw looks awesome. I am a cole slaw fanatic!

  10. I’ve never had Chick-fil-A’s cole slaw, but now I want to try it! That’s sooo nice of them to share the recipe!

  11. My husband LOVES the cole slaw at Chick fil A… I had no clue they were 86-ing it!  What the what??  He’s going to be pissed, but then be Oh-so happy that he can now have it whenever he wants!  Thanks for posting this!  Can’t wait to make it!  Pinned!  Cheers and thanks for sharing the YUM!  🙂

    1. I know, it’s a crazy decision, but I’m thankful they shared the recipe 🙂 Thanks for pinning!

  12. Did they say why they took something so loved off the menu? Glad you got the recipe though! I love coleslaw with a barbeque sandwich!

  13. Oh I love that you got the recipe for us, Aimee. Thank you. Can’t wait to try. I didn’t realize they took it off the menu. The perfect side.
