Ingredient Notes
- Flour – Regular all-purpose flour works great here. Just be sure to measure the flour correctly.
- Butter – I prefer to use unsalted butter in my baking. You could substitute salted butter and just reduce the amount of added salt in the recipe to 1/4 teaspoon. Also, the butter needs to be melted.
- Vanilla – It’s important to use PURE vanilla extract, not imitation. For the best flavor, try homemade vanilla extract.
- Chocolate chips – Semi-sweet chocolate chips work great here and hold up well in the waffles. Mini chocolate chips can also be used.
Easy Instructions
Step 1. Make the batter. Mix together the dry ingredients – flour, sugar, baking powder and salt – in a mixing bowl. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter and vanilla then fold in the chocolate chips. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and whisk until combined. Set aside.
Step 2. Prepare the waffle iron. Preheat the waffle iron while the waffle batter sits for a few minutes. Spray with baking spray but ONLY before the first batch of waffles.
Step 3. Cook the waffles. Ladle the batter into the preheated waffle iron and cook until golden brown. Carefully remove the waffle and repeat with remaining batter. Keep waffles warm until ready to serve!
Step 4. Garnish and Serve. We love serving our chocolate chip waffles with powdered sugar. Additional chocolate chips, homemade chocolate syrup, strawberry sauce, and fresh berries are also delicious additions.
Tips and Tricks
- For lighter, more Belgian style waffles, separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Add the egg yolks as directed in step 3. Beat the egg whites in a clean dry bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold the egg whites into the wet batter, then add the chocolate chips. Proceed with the recipe as directed.
- Waffle mix: You can mix together and keep the dry ingredients in an airtight container so it’s available anytime you want waffles!
- Need a good waffle maker? I love my Dash Waffle Iron. It’s inexpensive, easy to use and clean and always makes golden brown waffles. And they only take about 3 minutes to cook through.
- Keep waffles warm until ready to serve by setting them on a baking pan in the oven on the “warm” setting.
- Have fun with toppings! Serve your chocolate chip waffles with melted chocolate, syrup, extra butter, powdered sugar, fresh berries and more.
Recipe FAQs
Yes! Let the cooked waffles cool completely. Transfer to freezer bags with a sheet of wax paper between waffles to prevent sticking. Store in the freezer until ready to use, for up to 3-4 months.
You can reheat waffles straight from the freezer, no advanced planning needed. Place a frozen waffle in a toaster or toaster oven and cook until heated through. (It even gets the crispy edges back!)
Alternatively, you can also reheat frozen waffles in an oven at 350 degrees F. Cover the waffles loosely with foil to keep from drying out as they heat.
Make sure your waffle iron is hot enough before adding the batter. An iron that’s too cool won’t cook the inside of the waffle thoroughly making it more likely for the waffle to split and stick to the pan.
