Making your own seasonings at home is easy and affordable. From homemade taco seasoning, to pumpkin pie spice mix and vanilla extract, we’ve got it all.
What is Everything Bagel Mix
You’ve probably had “Everything” seasoning on a bagel, at least once or twice. It’s the best.
The Trader Joe’s pre-made mix is great too. Sadly, we no longer live near one so I figured that I could create my own version for less money and with better flavor.
This Everything Bagel seasoning is done in a flash, and will add instant flavor to any dish you dress with it. Here are a few reasons why the recipe works so well,
- It’s the most versatile seasoning. Use it as a seasoning, garnish, flavor enhancer, or topping. From breakfast eggs to sushi bowls, you can literally put it on everything.
- Quick to make, and has a long shelf life. You only need to spend 5 minutes of your time twice a year, and you’re sorted. Since it has a shelf life of 6 months, you can make it in bulk and enjoy it all year round.
- Vegan, nut-free, and gluten-free. This seasoning is very allergy-friendly. Made with five seeds and salt, it doesn’t contain any dairy, flour, or nuts.

Ingredient Notes
- White and Black Sesame Seeds – These are the backbone of the recipe. A mix of black and white sesame seeds makes the seasoning visually stunning. You can usually find them in the spice section. But the bigger and more economical packs are found in the Asian food aisle. You can also buy “tuxedo” sesame seeds, a blend of white and black sesame seeds.
- Poppy Seeds – They add a crunch. So make sure your jar of poppy seeds is fresh and crunchy, not stale and chewy.
- Dried Minced Onion – Or dried onion flakes add a lot of flavor and texture, so don’t replace it with onion powder.
- Dried Minced Garlic – You’ll find it in the spice section of the grocery store. Make sure you don’t confuse it with garlic salt or granulated garlic.
- Kosher Salt – Or coarse sea salt, NOT regular salt or Himalayan Pink Salt. The salt must be flaky and not rock-hard. This way, it compliments the texture of the other ingredients.
Easy Instructions
The recipe is literally one step, and that is. Measure the ingredients an mix them in a bowl.
Viola.
To make your plain bagels with seasoning mix, brush the tops with water then add a generous amount of seasoning to the top.
Tips and Tricks
- Use DRIED onion and garlic. Make sure to use dried minced onion and garlic found in the spice aisle and not freshly minced ones.
- Don’t use table salt. Instead, try a flaky or coarse salt. The larger granules help with both the texture and taste. If you use table salt, then it will settle at the bottom and disrupt the balance in flavors.
- Don’t make substitutions. This seasoning is all about size and proportions, so try to avoid skipping ingredients or making any substitutions. All the ingredients are roughly the same size which helps them stay equally distributed for the best flavor.
- Toast the sesame seeds. To add a nuttier flavor to the seasoning, lightly toast the white sesame seeds before adding them to the mixture.
Serving Suggestions
As a garnish.
It can make a lot of dishes taste and look stunning. Sprinkle it on avocado toast, poke bowls, baked potatoes, salads, or pizzas.
As a seasoning.
The classic recipe where it all started: Bagels. Before they go in the oven, brush the bagels with water and dip them in the seasoning. Then bake. You can also sprinkle it on breakfast eggs, lettuce wraps, egg salad sandwiches, or cheese toast.
On baked goods.
Similar to bagels, you can put the seasoning on a lot of baked goods before they go in the oven, like homemade bread, Danish, flatbreads, dinner rolls, or hamburger buns.
As a flavor enhancer.
Make our everything bagel dip or mix it in some softened butter, sour cream, or cream cheese. Then serve it along with some crudites, crackers, or chips. You can even smear it on a bagel or toast.

If you want to match the flavor of store-bought Everything Bagel seasoning, I’d recommend sticking to the recipe. If not, you can play around with the proportions and skip ingredients you don’t like or add more of what you like.
Both ways work. You can use raw sesame seeds if you like the seasoning’s texture to be slightly chewy. If you want a nuttier and crunchier texture, then lightly toast the sesame seeds before adding them to the seasoning.
Yes, but only if you stick to the recipe. The best part is that you can make it taste better by adjusting the quantities of the ingredients to suit your personal taste.
