My family LOVES greek takeout food. From creamy Homemade Hummus to easy, vegetarian Greek Zucchini Meatballs. The zesty flavor of Greek food is just amazing.

Why this Recipe Works

I could eat these delicious pita sandwiches daily for lunch or dinner.

The tender beef cooked with all my favorite Greek herbs and spices keeps me coming back for “just one more bite” every time I make them.

A word to the wise: these are NOT traditional Gyros.

So, please don’t make them expecting them to be authentic Greek gyros, which are made with lamb.

I wish I had my own vertical spit so I COULD make authentic gyro sandwiches with lamb (because I love those too).

But as long as you’re not expecting these to taste just like the gyros from your favorite Greek restaurant, I can all but guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

These are beef sirloin slices in a pita with tzatziki sauce. It’s as close as I can get to a homemade gyro without using lamb cooked on a vertical spit!

I just couldn’t resist giving my beef gyros the deluxe treatment and ate mine with juicy red tomatoes and some fresh homemade tzatziki sauce on top.

I would usually put slices of onion on my pita, however, the sauce has plenty of onion flavor it wasn’t even necessary.

The best part? I made the tzatziki sauce in the morning, so come dinner time it only took about 15 minutes from start to table. Enjoy!

Ingredient Notes

Incredible Greek pita sandwiches start with cooking seasoned meat to tender melt-in-your-mouth perfection.

Here’s what I used for the beef in this recipe:

  • Beef sirloin steak, cut into strips
  • Oregano, dried
  • Rosemary, fresh 
  • Greek seasoning
  • Olive oil 
  • Salt and pepper

Directions

STEP 1. In a large resealable plastic bag, toss the beef strips with the all the herbs and seasoning until well coated.

STEP 2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sautee the seasoned beef strips until desired doneness (about 10 minutes).

STEP 3. Serve on warm pita bread with sliced tomatoes, Tzatziki sauce and other toppings as desired.

Tzatziki Sauce Recipe

While my kids enjoyed the steak pieces even without any sauce, a generous drizzle of homemade Tzatziki makes these pita sandwiches even better!

If you’ve never tried Tzatziki before, it’s a sauce made from Greek yogurt, lemon juice and cucumber with onions and garlic. The creamy, cool taste is the perfect pairing for the warm beef!

It also happens to be incredibly easy to make. Just remember to make the sauce several hours before you plan to serve the Beef Pitas. The flavor of this sauce is at its best when the ingredients have time to meld together.

And be sure to save the leftovers! Along with beef pitas, I aslo love Tzatziki on Greek Chicken Skewers with Avocado Tzatziki and vegetarian Greek Zucchini “Meatballs.

Here’s what you need for the Greek yogurt sauce: 

  • Greek yogurt (plain, unsweetened)
  • Lemon juice
  • Diced onion
  • Diced cucumber
  • Garlic
  • Salt and pepper

To make the sauce, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.

Don’t have time to wait that long? The sauce will still taste good! Don’t let lack of time discourage you from trying it.

Tips and Tricks

  • Don’t overcook the beef. I personally like my sirloin a little bit pink! If you like more well done beef, go for it, just keep a close eye on the sirloin strips as you cook so they don’t get tough.
  • Toast or warm the pita for a few minutes in the oven before adding the beef for best taste. I always use store bought pita here but heating the bread makes everything taste so much fresher!
  • Use your favorite toppings! Don’t feel limited to just the tomato slices and yogurt sauce I used. Fresh parsley, diced red onion, shredded lettuce and hot sauce are other great ideas for adding to your Beef Pitas. Use our Lemon Hummus for a unique flavor twist!
  • Don’t feel like a sandwich? This beef is delicious served in tons of other ways. Try it over a bed of greens for a tasty Greek salad or serve it over rice.

Ingredients 

For the Beef:

  • 1 Tablespoon fresh rosemary minced
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Greek seasoning like Cavender’s
  • 2 pounds beef top sirloin steak boneless, cut into strips
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup tzatziki sauce
  • 6 pitas

Instructions 

  • In large resealable bag, mix seasonings and add beef strips. Seal bag and shake.

  1. Hi! This is a fantastic and oh-so-yummy idea instead of pork or chicken gyros; being greek I know, trust me! Even though in the traditional tzatziki recipe we never use onion and prefer vinegar instead of lemon. Try it out some time… I am enjoying so much reading your blog!

  5. I love Greek food…especially gyros! But I haven’t tried making them at home yet. I almost bought ingredients for tzatziki sauce last night and I decided not too. Now seeing your post today makes we want to go back to the store. These look fantastic…even if they aren’t quite gyros. 🙂
