The Best Waffle Mix Recipe
Waffles are the superheroes of weekend breakfast! Sleeping in on a Saturday and having fresh waffles with maple syrup is the best.
While sometimes I might crave french toast or pumpkin scones, it’s waffles that make everyone happy!
Never made homemade waffles before? I’m here to assist you!
- This recipe creates perfect waffles with buttery crisp edges that yield to a light and fluffy interior.
- Homemade Waffles sweep the floor with the frozen toaster waffles—and you can even freeze leftovers!
- Making waffles from scratch is hardly any more difficult than using a waffle mix. Boxed waffle mix can definitely be convenient but really just saves you the step of mixing the dry ingredients together. You can combine our dry ingredients together ahead of time too.

Ingredients for Waffle Mix
Here’s what you need to make this easy waffle recipe.
PRO TIP: Store dry ingredients in a sealed container for easy access when making waffles.
For the dry waffle mix:
- All Purpose Flour
- Baking Powder
- Sugar
- Kosher Salt
Combine these ingredients in a bowl, then proceed with the recipe.
If you like, you can make this in advance to store. Then the next time you want waffles, pull out the dry ingredients and use like you would use a storebought waffle mix!
Wet ingredients to make the waffle batter recipe:
- Eggs
- Milk
- Melted Butter
- Vanilla Extract
How to Make Waffle Batter
Easy as 1, 2, 3!
- Make the batter. Mix the wet ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Pour it into the dry mix and whisk to combine. Let sit for a few minutes while you preheat your waffle iron.
- Prepare your waffle iron. Preheat your waffle iron. Spray waffle iron with baking spray before the FIRST batch only.
- Cook! Ladle batter into preheated waffle iron and cook until golden brown. Carefully remove the waffle and repeat with remaining batter. Keep waffles warm until ready to serve!
You can also use a belgian waffle maker to make my classic waffle recipe.
Aimee’s best tip
Make sure your waffle iron is hot enough before adding the batter. If the iron is not hot enough, the waffle may not cook evenly inside. It could end up sticking to the pan.
Waffle Toppings
They built waffle squares to catch pools of maple syrup and butter.
- Fresh fruit and whipped cream are also heavenly on these waffles!
- If you haven’t tried my homemade buttermilk syrup yet, DO IT. Only 5 ingredients and 5 minutes, you’ll love the rich flavor!
- Don’t forget about the dessert waffles. A scoop of cold vanilla ice cream on top of a warm waffle just about makes me weak in the knees. (My kids have no complaints about them, either.) Add a drizzle of our homemade chocolate syrup or strawberry syrup to complete the treat.
Storage Tips
Make a large quantity of homemade waffles on the weekend and store any extras in the freezer. Then you’ll have convenient toaster waffles for weekday breakfasts, but with all the good taste of homemade!
To freeze waffles.
- Let all the waffles cool completely.
- Transfer to freezer bags with a sheet of wax paper between layers of waffle to prevent sticking. Store in the freezer until ready to use.
To reheat frozen waffles:
- Place individual waffle in a toaster or toaster oven and heat until cooked through.
- To reheat frozen waffles, bake them in the oven at 350 F. Cover with foil to prevent drying out while heating.

Notes
- Along with a good waffle recipe, you need a good waffle iron! I love my Dash Waffle Iron. It’s inexpensive, easy to use and clean and always makes golden brown waffles.
- In my Dash waffle iron, the waffles take about 3 minutes to cookthrough. Yours might take a bit less time or a bit more. If you’re new to waffle making, this make take some trial and error until you really get to know your waffle iron!
- Keep waffles warm until ready to serve by setting them on a baking pan in the oven on the “warm” setting.
- Looking for low carb or gluten free? Use the Dash waffle maker to make Chaffles. Cheesy buns with no carbs!

Hi there’s! Can I sub the regular milk for buttermilk using the same measurements or will I have to adjust it? Thank You in advance
Yep, same amount.
These are by far the BEST waffles I have ever made and eaten. The recipe is amazing!!! This is my go to recipe! I will never make them any other way. Thank you for this awesome recipe Aimee! I also tried the buttermilk pancake recipe of yours and it is also amazing!
How many calories in one waffle?
OMG! I have NEVER made waffles from scratch. Thies recipe is SPOT ON! My waffles came out so air fluffy yet not too sweet. Thank you @sugarysweets for this recipe, I will never buy boxed pancake mix again.
I am so glad! We freeze leftover waffles (if you have any) and pop them in the toaster straight from the freezer for a quick homemade breakfast. ENJOY 🙂
These are great. Can I refrigerate for later in the day or do I have to freeze them ?
Great waffle recipe! I’m so glad I found this recipe. This recipe is so easy and tastes so much better than store bought.
I only knock 1 star because it was a little too wet after 1.5 c milk so I added another .25 c flour. Probably because of altitude but either way we like waffle batter a little thicker.
I’ve been craving waffles lately and found your recipe. These came out so good! I omitted the salt since I have to watch my sodium intake and used almond milk since that’s what was in the fridge, lol. And it made a lot, so I have leftovers to freeze! So good.😋😋
Very good, they come out perfect every time, my family lives them, Thank you! ❤️
So once you make the waffle mix…how much of the mix goes with the wet ingredients?
You left that out of the recipe.
It’s all there in the recipe card 🙂
The waffles are wonderful – fluffy and tasty. The recipe is a keeper.
Best and easiest recipe for waffles! Waffles are not my forte, but I took the challenge! So happy I did. I halved the recipe and it was plenty for 2 adults. I like to play with flavors so added a bit of cinnamon. Sometimes I will use Almond extract in place of vanilla.
Easy recipe and the waffles turned out fantastic! I have tried many recipes and this is the most flavorful and the waffles come out fluffy yet crisp. I did use salted butter since that’s all I had and they tasted great (not salty at all).
these waffles are amazing!!!!! the perfect amount of salt and sugar. They are just so good. My husband really likes them! He actually noticed that were was butter in the recipe. so smart and adds so much flavor, thanks for this! will only make this recipe from now on.
Waffles were a hit in my house. Just got a new waffle maker, so I wanted to try my hand at “made from scratch.” Great recipe to start with. The waffle iron I used was the Ambiano Double Rotating Belgium waffle maker my husband got for me at Aldi’s…it makes 2 waffles at a time! The 1X recipe made 5 waffles. One was very filling! Thank you, Aimee, for this recipe!
One of the best waffle recipes I’ve tasted since my mother’s homemade waffles 40+ years ago. I substituted brown sugar for white and added Walnuts and Bananas to the mix. Then I topped them with my own homemade cranberry sauce that has Cinnamon and Pineapple in it. I have 2 mini waffle irons that make them just the right size to fit in the toaster for later…WOW!!! Just
WOW!!!
