Why this Recipe Works

Once you become addicted to homemade coffee creamers, you’ll never go back!

  • This recipe uses a dash of espresso powder and cocoa to create the familiar richness of classic Irish cream, without adding liqueur.
  • A base of sweetened condensed milk makes this creamer blend smoothly with any cup of coffee. No separating cream or watery coffee here.
  • You can make a jar of this creamer well in advance to have on hand for coffee emergencies! Just shake and add it right to your mug or glass.

A batch of this Irish Cream Coffee Creamer recipe costs just pennies per serving. Compare the cost to your favorite store bought version and I think you’ll see why you can’t afford NOT to make this recipe!

Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for irish cream coffee creamer.
  • Espresso powder – This does not give the creamer itself a strong coffee taste, but does add an acidity that mimics the liqueur in traditional Bailey’s creamers. I use this one from amazon.
  • Cocoa powder – Like the espresso, the cocoa does not give the creamer a strong chocolate flavor. It does make it taste beautifully rich and gives it a light brown appearance.
  • Vanilla extract- use our homemade vanilla extract recipe, or a pure vanilla from the store!
  • Almond extract- combined with the vanilla it creates a rich, nutty flavor.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use fat free condensed milk and skim milk in the recipe instead of full fat versions for fat free coffee creamer.
  • On the flip side, swap the milk for heavy cream (or half and half) for an ultra creamy version!
  • Use the expiration date on your milk to determine the lifespan of your coffee creamer. The fresher the milk, the longer your homemade creamer will last in the fridge.
  • Shake the jar of creamer before adding it to your coffee. It’s natural for ingredients to separate as they chill. A good shake takes care of that! (Plus it’s fun.)

Recipe FAQs

Is espresso powder the same as ground coffee beans?

No, it’s not just ground coffee beans. Espresso Powder is intensely concentrated coffee that’s dried into a rich, heavily roasted powder. It’s used to enhance the flavor of chocolate or add a hint of coffee to baked goods. (Or, in this case, coffee creamer!)

Can I use this creamer in iced coffee?

You definitely can! I love Irish Cream Creamer in both hot AND iced coffee drinks!

How much creamer does this recipe make?

This recipe yields about 2 cups of creamer. That’s enough for a house full of coffee drinkers to be set for a while, depending on how much cream you like in your coffee, of course.

Comments & Reviews

  1. This sounds so good, Aimee! Definitely planning to try it. I love Irish Cream flavor in coffees when I get coffee out – homemade will be so luxurious! Just curious, why the addition of espresso powder, since we’ll be adding the creamer to a cup of coffee already? I mean, the more coffee flavor the better I suppose! 😀

    1. Some people love using this creamer (myself included) in a cup of cocoa! Plus, yeah, more coffee the better 🙂

  2. I just found out today that Bailey’s Irish Creme has been discontinued. I am unable to drink the alcoholic version, but I do like the taste of the coffee creamer. It was a shame they quit distributing the creamer. Closest to the real thing. However, I happened to see your recipe online. Going to buy the ingredients on my next shopping trip. I’ve never used Expresso powder and wouldn’t even know where to look for it. But I’ll try to find in Publix.

    1. International delight has also not renewed their license with Coldstone Creamery so no more Sweet Cream. Instead International Delight has started making it’s own version and they call it sweet and creamy. it is no comparison to Coldstone’s sweet cream. Matter of fact, it is terrible, don’t waste your money. I am happy I found this post. My next step was to purchase the Irish Creme and now I know it is also discontinued. I will definitely try to make my own.

  3. I can’t wait to try this. We’ve been using International Delight brand Irish Cream and it’s not longer available. Since it is loaded with artificial ingredients anyway, this gives us an opportunity to adjust our tastes to something ummm…. healthier? 🙂

Thank you for sharing this recipe!

    1. I am still buying it – however it flies off the shelf fast and not always available. I just keep hunting until I find it. I was really hoping this recipe would taste like the international delight version of Irish cream, but it unfortunately isn’t even close 😢

  4. Hi Aimee…I see this is an older thread, but wondering if you might come up with a homemade Bailey’s Mocha Mudslide creamer recipe? It has not been discontinued, but not available in my area any longer…even when requested 🙁 My elderly neighbor is heartbroken. I would like to make it for him, if possible. Never had it myself. Thanks for any consideration of my request. Karen 🙂

  5. So when you say espresso powder, is that the same stuff you use to make espresso (finely ground coffee) or something more like instant coffee?

    1. I use the King Arthur Flour brand…but here are some links. It’s not the same as the coffee 🙂 http://amzn.to/1UXoh2K

  6. Aimee – do you have to heat this? You say to mix it in a small saucepan, but do not say to heat? Just want to make sure I do the fix step correctly. Thanks!

  7. I love that you can make your own coffee creamer at home – that is my totally my favorite part so this is simply genius Aimee! Pinning!

  8. I just bought a bottle of Bailey’s to use in recipes for St. Patty’s day, but I love this coffee creamer to start my mornings with! And saving money on MY coffee addiction sounds absolutely lovely. 🙂

  9. Working at a British pub Paddy’s is a nuts day for us!! I bet you had some fun times at your Irish restaurant. Is it bad I want this and alcoholic irish cream in my coffee!! LOL Maybe I should just drink irish cream on the rocks!

  10. This recipe is so smart! Seriously so genius! Now I need to get up and have coffee!

  11. Such a great recipe Aimee!! I need to start making my own coffee creamer. I swear, it’s so expensive!

  12. Is there a way to make these sugar free? I want to share with some employees of my apartment bldg., and they use sugar free.. Ones hypoglycemic.. I’m diabetic, but I want the real stuff! And I am hooked!! Thanks loads!!

  13. Looks delicious! I love Irish Cream coffee creamer.. which is evident by my post today 🙂 I’ve never used that espresso powder I may have to check it out.

    1. Aimee,
Have been looking for a Irish creamer I can myself and found yours. But I was wondering, I have a allergy to almonds, can I use all vanilla extract instead of the almond?
I’m go through the rest of your recipes to find more coffee creamers
      Thanks and God bless
