Now, I bring you Eggnog French Toast! This is an amazing addition to your holiday brunch or you can make it for breakfast whenever you have a leftover eggnog to use up.

Christmas dinners get a lot of attention, but Christmas Breakfast is one of the meals I look forward to most. We often have some kind of Egg Casserole or Biscuits and Sausage Gravy for brunch in my family, but I like having a sweet option available too.

  • This Eggnog French toast fills the kitchen with the smell of Christmas while everyone’s opening presents and it’s a dish the adults love as much as the kids.
  • Best of all, you can prep it the night before! Wake up on Christmas morning and have a delicious festive breakfast ready in no time. This french toast is baked instead of fried in the pan, so it’s even easier.

There are a few ingredients that make this overnight French Toast stand out from the crowd.

  • Texas Toast – Trust me on this one. Thick slices of Texas toast make french toast that soaks up all the egg flavor but doesn’t get mushy on the inside. The thick cut of the bread makes such a difference.
  • Rum flavoring – Totally worth purchasing this nifty ingredient for this recipe to give it an authentic eggnog taste without adding alcohol. Afterward you can use it in my other eggnog recipes like Eggnog Cupcakes.
  • Real eggnog – The full fat, full sugar stuff is the best here! Save some eggnog for our easy eggnog cookies.

How to Make Eggnog French Toast Casserole

To make the french toast, you whisk eggs with eggnog, milk and the rum flavoring.

Dip cubes of Texas toast bread into the mixture, then into a baking dish. Sprinkle this with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Here’s the overnight part: Let the bread mixture chill in the fridge for at least 4 hours or up to overnight.

Before baking, pour melted butter and brown sugar on top and bake the whole thing in the oven. I love to add chopped pecans too for a little crunch! No need to toast the pecans as this will happen while you bake!

Enjoy this baked French toast while it’s still warm.

Substitutions

Not in the mood for eggnog but still want a tasty overnight French toast recipe for your brunch?

You can easily make this a classic French toast by swapping out the eggnog for more milk. Replace the rum flavor with vanilla extract and you have a delicious French toast that everyone will love.

If you can’t find Texas toast bread, swap it for any thick cut hearty white bread. Brioche or Cinnamon Raisin bread works especially well, too! I don’t recommend subbing whole wheat or gluten free breads in this recipe.

For dairy free French toast, try swapping the eggnog for an almond or soy based nog and the milk for your favorite non-dairy milk.{Disclaimer: I haven’t tried it this way yet, but it should work well here!}

The pecans on top of this french toast are optional, but if you are a pecan lover they’re going to make you so happy! The moist cubes of french toast paired with crunchy bites of pecans are a holiday delight.

How do you store leftover eggnog french toast casserole?

Eggnog French toast is best served right away, preferably while still warm. If you have leftovers, I would cover and refrigerate it to enjoy within 2 days. Warm the french toast in the microwave for a few seconds before you eat it.

Can you freeze eggnog french toast casserole?

While it’s possible to freeze french toast casserole, I don’t recommend it. The bread tends to get too soggy after baking and heating.

Can I omit the pecans in eggnog french toast?

Absolutely. Make your eggnog french toast bake without nuts, or use walnuts in place of pecans.

Serving Suggestions

The butter and brown sugar poured on top before baking makes this eggnog french toast plenty sweet and moist on its own.

If you like, you can also serve it with a little powdered sugar sprinkled on top or some maple syrup on the side. Homemade buttermilk syrup pairs nicely with this casserole too!

My family also loves a little cinnamon sugar mix on top!

Ingredients 

  • 1 loaf Texas Toast about 14 slices, cubed
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup eggnog
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon rum flavoring
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted
  • ¾ cup light brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup pecans chopped (optional)

Instructions 

  • In large bowl whisk eggs with eggnog, milk and rum flavoring. Dip cubed bread in mixture and place in 9-inch baking dish, until all bread is used. Pour any remaining mixture over bread. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.
  • Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours)
  • When ready to bake, in small bowl mix melted butter with brown sugar. Pour over bread (sprinkle with pecans if desired). Bake uncovered in 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Swap out the milk for more eggnog and replace the rum flavoring with vanilla extract if desired.
  • Find a loaf of bread approximately 16 oz. Brioche works great too!

    Made it Christmas Eve without sugar topping and healthier bread…young kids approved! Switched out one egg for mash banana, no milk just eggnog, didn’t have rum flavouring so added cloves, was delicious and time saving! Thank you for this recipe!

    Made it last night for brunch this morning. Was sweet, but very yummy. I also opted for all eggnog and no milk, which was great, but it was fairly rich. That was up my alley though, so will likely make again! Used a combination of cinnamon raison bread and brioche, and the sightly different taste/texture is something I would do again. You could safely reduce the sugars and it would still be delicious. But, around the holidays, as is is wonderful!
